The earth comes alive in the Cowichan region as spring takes hold. Trees begin to bud, seeds start to shoot, and our growers happily get their hands back in the soil. It’s the season of cherry blossom (particularly spectacular in Ladysmith and on Duncan’s Canada Avenue), locally grown flowers, and the welcome return of bustling farmers’ markets.

As the temperature begins to rise, visitors are drawn to our many trails, rushing waterfalls, and Provincial Parks. Quieter than in summer but just as beautiful as ferns unfurl and eye-catching blossoms and berries fill the forest with colour. Keen birdwatchers will spot nests and hatchlings from a respectful distance while other wildlife watchers can keep an eye out for young fauna. Our estuaries, ecological reserves, and riverside pathways provide excellent viewing and walking trails.
Proprietors too start to reopen the doors to farms and wineries as the hive of spring activity begins. Explore the very roots of delicious heritage produce grown in fertile soil and salt air, and artisan goods that showcase our people’s passion for living close to the land. Outdoor farmers’ markets are in full swing from May to September. Culinary travellers will want to take many of the picturesque, winding side roads throughout our region to stumble across farm stands in unexpected places brimming with baked goodies and spring ingredients.
Spring events
Towards the end of the season, outdoor performances and festivals start to pop up, bringing the community and its guests together to move to the music and appreciate the arts. British Columbia’s largest bluegrass music festival takes place at the 250-acre Laketown Ranch in June, every Father’s Day weekend. The Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show takes place at the Cowichan Valley Arts Council gallery space in Duncan from early May into June with awards, artist demonstrations, and tours, and the Cowichan Artisans host their Spring Show and Studio Tour in April.
