Harvest season

Fall in the Cowichan region is all about gratitude for the abundance that surrounds us in land and sea. Our historic, family-run farms extend a warm welcome for guests to celebrate the harvest with us. A chance to highlight the delicious produce—everything from vegetables and lavender, to Canada’s first commercial tea grower, Westholme, and even kiwis—grown with intentional, organic, and sustainable practices. A showcase of the wines and ciders that are the result of the Cowichan terroir.

Fall events

The Cowichan Exhibition Fair that takes place in September is one of the best ways to appreciate all that goes into our region’s bounty of produce, including our farming traditions and the warm-hearted faces that make up our farming community. Enjoy demonstrations, exhibitions, and rides, topped off with live performances into the evening and of course a picnic meal or two of local produce. The Cider Harvest Festival also takes place at the end of September at Merridale Cidery and Distillery. An uncommon opportunity to taste such a spread of craft ciders, not just from the Cowichan region but from farm-based cideries all across British Columbia.

On the water

Avid and amateur fishermen head to the Cowichan River for the kick-off of fly fishing season in October, particularly with the knowledge of our unique species of brown trout. Recreational boating excursions are another fantastic way to enjoy peak fishing season, whether you’re excited by the idea of stepping foot on a fishing boat or are keen to enjoy the uptick in wind the fall brings on a sailing boat. For those remaining on dry land, the Cowichan trails are slightly quieter, and cooler, and hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers can enjoy the forest foliage’s fall colours.
