Commit a taste to memory
The Cowichan Valley is Vancouver Island’s only official winemaking region and one of the largest in British Columbia. When you dig beneath the vines to the unique terroir and rich history of our land it quickly makes sense. A mix of ancient volcanic activity, salt, and glaciers in the Cowichan region has led to some of the best soil for growing our chosen grape varieties. Located in Canada’s only maritime Mediterranean climatic zone, our region also seldom freezes—protecting plants from frost and extending the growing season despite the cooler climate.
History of winemaking
Winemaking in our region officially began in 1992 when our first commercial winery opened in Duncan. Yet European homesteaders were growing grapes for private consumption as far back as the 1800s. A willingness to experiment in this new climate was evident in 1986 when an aptly titled “experimental vineyard” opened in Duncan on the lands now home to the Blue Grouse Estate Winery. Over 100 test vines of different grape varieties were grown there.
This experimentation and European influence can still be seen today in the varieties of wine produced—from Spanish Tempranillo and French Pinot Gris to more up-and-coming varieties like German Bacchus and flavours that showcase other Cowichan produce, like lavender.
Go with the slow
Our proprietors are eager to share a deep appreciation for the beautiful surroundings that provide us with so many ingredients over a crisp glass of Cowichan wine. Organic tending methods, natural wines, and vines that have been spray-free for over 60 years are just some practices dedicated to ensuring a flourishing natural environment for future generations.
Carve out plenty of time to wander unrushed at our wineries. Experience what it means to be a winemaker in our region and hear intriguing stories that showcase our viticulture heritage and the warmth of family-run businesses.
