10 Ways to Experience the Cowichan Harvest

Posted on

by

Did you know that there are over 800 farms in Cowichan, which is why harvest is our favourite time of the year.  Our moderate climate allows us to harvest everything from wine to kiwis, to hops and all the vegetables you can imagine. So, this harvest season, whether you’re looking for family activities, intimate dinners with someone special or a theatrical night out, Cowichan in Autumn has something for everyone.  Here are ten festive fall ideas for celebrating the harvest season.

1.  Taste the Harvest

It doesn’t get fresher than this!  Experience the fruits of this harvest in one central location at the Duncan Farmers Market! Open year-round, this Saturday market features products that are locally grown or crafted in the Cowichan region.

Experience the rise of small-scale agriculture on Sundays through to October at the Cobble Hill Farmers’ Market. This bee-friendly farmers market is the perfect way to get to know your farmers and find out where your food is from. Just don’t forget your basket!

2. Cheers with a Seasonal Brew

At this time of year, our Cowichan brewers are hard at work creating delicious harvest and winter ales.

Over at Red Arrow Brewing in Duncan, they’ve collected the hop harvest from their Fresh Hop Co-Op to bring us the Sunset Empire New England Style IPA. This single batch brew includes three varietals of hops naturalized to Cowichan. It has a bold, but light body, with zesty notes of grapefruit, lemongrass and herbal pine.

Riot Brewing in Chemainus is releasing their Family Reunion Brut IPA with Cranberries in early October. Brewed in collaboration with Blind Enthusiasm in Edmonton this crisp and bubbly IPA is complemented by a blush of tart cranberries and Hallertau Blanc hops.  Also coming back to Riot this winter is the Vortex Porter; this brew is a mix of dark, roasted malts, balanced sweetness, coffee and chocolate. The Vortex brought home a silver in the 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards and is definitely a local favourite — look for it in November.

The Craig Street Brew Pub will be launching their Honey Golden Ale later in September. This easy drinking ale is smooth, malty, less carbonated beer with sweet honey flavour. Next month, they’re producing The Wild Wings IPA, this is a bigger hoppier IPA that is released every year with the Wild Wings Art Show in support of the Somenos Marsh Society. This IPA recipe changes from year to year, so if you’ve had it before, you’ll want to make sure you get a pint of this year’s brew.

3. Enjoy the Fall Colours

Experience the reds, yellows and oranges of fall through Cowichan’s stunning scenery. Whether you’re hiking on Maple Mountain, biking down the Cowichan Valley Regional Trail or driving through the scenic countryside there are endless possibilities for experiencing the fall colours in Cowichan.
