Culture and history

Historically, Penelakut Island was the location of the largest Hul’qumi’num-speaking village in the Gulf Islands. Today, about 300 members live here in the independent community of Spune’luxutth. It continues to be where strong traditional culture is deeply tied to its pristine waters and serene natural spaces devoid of noise and pollution. Penelakut Island is generally not open to visitors without an invitation from the Band Council.
